A HALO OF SMOKE-
Part 1
Smoking is a very popular vice, especially among the
young who think it is the in thing to do. The US
government began investigating the relationship
between smoking and health in the 1950s, and the
yearly Surgeon General’s Reports that have been issued
since that time have completely changed the attitude
of American people towards smoking. Now that most
enlightened Americans are giving up on this vice,
manufactures of cigarettes are concentrating on the
Asian market for their sales.
The law requires that this be printed on every pack of
cigarettes; “Warning: Smoking is harmful to your
health.” In recent months, the law has gone a step
further to require manufactures to print on every pack
pictures of caners caused my smoking. In spite of
this, 700 billion cigarettes are manufactured each
year in the US alone!
If you want to shorten you life, smoking is one of the
most effective ways of doing it! Every cigarette
smokes shortens life by 14 minutes. The average
35-year old has the prospect of living to the age of
72, but the average expectancy of a smoker of the same
age who smokes only 15 cigarettes a day is shortened
by 6n years. During this time he will have smoked
approximately 200,000 cigarettes. The 2-pack a day
smoker who is 25 years old will shorten his life by
little more than eight years.
In the US it is estimated that the cost of health care
related to smoking is close to $16 billion annually,
to which must be added another $30 billion in lost
production and wages.
What poisons does a smoker get from tobacco? The
average smoker only knows of nicotine. Analysis,
however, has shown that a tobacco leaf itself contains
about 1,000 chemical substances. In addition to that,
burning end of cigarette is an extraordinary chemical
factory that produces thousands of new chemicals. In
fact, tobacco smoke carries more than 4,000 chemically
different compounds. It is sad that the smoker not
only poisons himself/herself but dozen other innocent
victims around them.
