REST-Part 1
The human body is designed to for movement-for work or
play-for is a law of nature that whatsoever is not
used weakens and deteriorates. A certain man once
purchased a car and after 10 years the odometer showed
that it had been driven only for 37,000 kilometers. He
thought by using it sparingly he was prolonging its
life. But the mechanic said that the car needed to be
used more as it was under driven.
Our bodies, the most wonderful machine ever invented,
are definitely under-driven, too, what with our
sedentary habits and lack of exercise. Somebody once
facetiously observed that about the only exercise some
of us do is walking in circles, running into debts or
jumping into conclusions! We are told that a mild
leisurely walk after a meal will do us good. But most
people merely walk form the dinning table to the bed.
Be that as it may, we still need to remind our
extremely industrious and workaholic friends to “come
you yourselves apart…and rest a while.” There must be
a balance between labor and rest, between work and
play, for all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
Strange as it may seem, the secret of accomplishing a
lot of work is by taking a lot of rest. The human
heart does a prodigious amount of work for, say,
seventy or more years. How can this little organ, only
as big as your closed fist, do tremendous amount of
work? Its secret is that it takes some rest between
beats.
Some people find it difficult to rest; they work day
and night and are never content. Hard to rest? Even
the laziest person you’ve ever met will tell you that
resting is not hard at all! When we think of rest,
this should be a like an invitation to have a break,
to take a vacation, from life’s maddening rat race.
