Cheras Kuala Lumpur, the first batch of Medical
Missionary Volunteers started their class on the first working day
of 2010. 9 volunteers coming from different parts of Peninsular
Malaysia Mission arrived with their bags, excitement, anxiety,
sadness (in leaving their families) and expectations of what lies
ahead. They felt the call of God and responded positively despite
the fact that they do not know exactly what is going to happen.
The group, consisted of 7 ladies, (3 of whom are
Mothers), and 2 men were housed in 2 different hostels, and were
given monetary allowance to manage their food for the week. The
Adventist Community Health Centre (ACC in short) where the training
is held, is a 5-minute walk from their place of stay.
As the Health Ministries leader of PEM, I saw the need
through God’s Spirit the necessity of training Medical Missionaries
in this modern era, where there is a balanced program (or
curriculum) which includes the gospel, health, academic as well as
moral & spiritual foundations. The program consists of 11 weeks
theory and practical and 9 months community work where they will be
sent by 2’s within PEM territory, where there is an existing Health
Centres. Throughout the year, there will be a continuous monitoring
of the student’s progress in all aspects – spiritual, moral,
physical, social & mental (i.e. skills and knowledge of Health
Promotion).
In this day of Post-Modernism, where the old way of
reaching to people the gospel of Jesus is becoming more challenging,
what we need are committed people, both young and old, whose
training is founded in the love of Jesus, to showcase the testimony
of God’s amazing love; and through their examples many will be
brought to the cross.
Aside from the above, the beauty of this training is
that after one year, the Medical Missionaries will be given a
Diploma on Health Promotion by the Global University for Lifelong
Learning. This academic qualification will give each one of them an
opportunity to continue to work as Health Promoters in the
community.
