Fifteen volunteers drove from Kuala Lumpur to JB in order
to participate in the first JB City Health expo organized by the
Adventist Community Health Centre in cooperation with the JB City
Square and the local government of Johor Bahru.
The event was officially opened by Y.B. Mok, municipal
councillor of the area who was representing the invited guest, Y.B.
Datuk Shahrir, Member of Parliament in JB who was unable to make it
due to a pressing appointment. In his opening remarks, Y.B. Mok
reiterated the government’s vision to provide health education to
all citizens in order to reduce the impact of chromic diseases on
the nation. He further highlighted the need for private
organisations, NGOs and religious based organizations to assist the
government to fulfil its vision.
The 60-member volunteers consisted of four Medical
Doctors, five Nurses, four IT people, all worked tirelessly for two
days in order to serve the community through health screening,
counselling, cooking demo, hydrotherapy demo, exercise, temperance
awareness, among others. Volunteers came from different walks of
life and different languages but all became as one engrossed in the
work, with no language barrier whatsoever.
The whole event was a showcase of human duty of love to
follow people, as one participant commented; “what you all are doing
is very noble, you mean everything here is free of charge? And I get
to see the Doctor without any charges”? Yes all the services were
offered free of charge, it is our priority to spread the health
message to as many people as possible so that people will adopt
healthy lifestyles and live happily.
