NEWSTART for Pontian Adventist
Kindergarten, Johor (20 - 21 April 2009)
|
The 6-member team, assisted by the kindergarten teachers and Principal
divided the main hall into 8 stations; with each station representing
Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air, Rest & Trust in
God. The children were given up to 10 minutes to go through each
station, learning the concept of health through demonstrations, quick
lectures, and different activities. It was a program designed for
children aged 4-6 in order to help them understand the concept of
practicing good health habits in a manner that they will understand.
“Why do we need to drink water?”
“So that we don’t get sick!” so was the eager reply of the children
who went through the NEWSTART program. It was encouraging to realize
that most kids are aware of the importance of most natural treasures (NEWSTART).
It is now the challenge of the teachers and parents to rivet those
principles in there children.
During the night, the children’s parents were invited for a cooking
class and a 30-minute lecture by ACC’s Nutritionist, Ms Rose Solano on
“Healthy Kids, Happy Parents.” It was a rare discovery that some
parents actually feed their children with “teh tarik” and coffee
during breakfast. They were taught to learn simple yet nutritious
breakfast menu such as “power drink,” “vegetarian nugget” and the
all-time favorite “peanut butter-banana-sandwich.”
On the second day, the children made their own food which consist of
pizza and fruit salad, which were made of colorful vegetables, fruits
and cashew cheese. They were helped by their teachers to bake their
own pizza and equally share among them.
It was a very tiring 2 days yet with a very satisfying result, as one
of the team members puts it – “start teaching them with the concept of
good health while they are young so that they will not forget it.”
The teachers were reminded to reiterate to them the health concept
taught during class.
