Faith in
Action
“True & genuine religion in the sight of God means
caring for orphans & widows in their distress &
refusing to let the world corrupt you.” James 1:27
About one month ago I had a chance meeting with Bro.
Mung, a Myanmar refugee who is helping his people
(he has a valid UN Refugee card). My heart went out
for him and the work that he is doing.
Because of that chance meeting, Allan & myself decided
to visit the ZOMI Refugee Centre in KL. During the
visit we saw that the centre is quite organized;
they have Myanmar refugee UN volunteers who
coordinate in helping about 10,000 Zomi’s, 200+ of
whom are Seventh Day Adventists – some are
worshipping at KL English church.
The volunteers do not have proper jobs (they are legal
refugees) as they assist their fellow refugees who
cannot communicate in English; therefore they are
dependent upon the benevolence of some NGO’s and
Religious groups (FGA, Baptist, Catholics) in
meeting their monthly food needs. However, they do
not receive regular help so there are months that
they do not have enough food to eat. These
volunteers also act as teachers to the Myanmar
children as the Malaysia government do not allow
them to enter school.
The UN was able to talk to the government regarding
the refugees’ healthcare status and because of this
they are given 50% discount when they get sick and
visit any government hospital.
They have a small clinic in the centre (with a Myanmar
Nurse) however they have to buy their own medicines.
The following are the current needs of the centre:
- Dental Services
- Regular supply of Simple Medications for the
centre so that they do not need to buy
- Monthly provision of 1-2 sacks of rice for
the volunteers
There are about 10 Myanmar refugee centres within PEM
that is currently running, I told our Myanmar
brother that we shall work one at a time and see
where the Lord leads us. I am also planning to bring
them to some of our local churches to tell to our
members about their story. I am sure that many of
our church members are willing to help but that they
are not aware of their plight;
As this news reached the ears of Petaling Jaya English
church members, many were touched by their story and
some members pledged to donate money to help ease
their burden.
Praise the Lord that 2 days as of this writing, 3
boxes of medicines (courtesy of the Peninsular
Malaysia Mission (PEM) and 2 sacks of rice (courtesy
of PJ English church members) were delivered to the
hands of our Myanmar brothers and sisters; and on 27
– 28 February, a Dental outreach will be held at the
Zomi centre organized by the Adventist Community
Health Centre (ACC) in collaboration with the Penang
Adventist Hospital (PAH).
